‘Yellow Jacket’ kicks off with an aggressive, low synth that sets up the rest of moa moa’s stunning new release. These crunchy, distorted bass provide a bed for reverb-heavy vocals and hypnotic held notes to combine into a strangely atmospheric texture. The lyrics touch on jealous and love, with the composition being explained by its writer, James Ratcliffe: “Musically, I wanted us to create something that mirrored the simplicity of the subject matter in an interesting way, which comes through in the contrast between the Neanderthal rhythm and the more cutting, thick guitars”. The influences from the likes of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Tame Impala shine through; maybe 2020 will see them claim similar notoriety too. - Dan Peeke
